W2M secures validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its decarbonisation targets
World2Meet, the travel division of the Iberostar Group, has obtained validation of its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a partnership promoted by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This ratification confirms that W2M’s climate strategy is aligned with the organisation’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard.
- The company has committed to reaching net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.
- These decarbonisation targets aim to limit global warming to 1.5ºC, in line with the most ambitious scenario of the Paris Agreement.
Alejandro Subías, Corporate General Director of World2Meet, stated: “This milestone reflects our firm determination to lead positive change in the travel sector, aligning with climate science and contributing to a more sustainable future.”
World2Meet’s decarbonisation objectives fall within the most ambitious framework of the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit global warming to 1.5ºC – the highest level of commitment in the fight against climate change. Accordingly, the company has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050.

W2M’s climate strategy is structured in two phases. Firstly, its short-term targets – over the next five years – include reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 42% compared to 2023. The company also aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions from aviation fuel (Scope 1 and 3) per RPK (Revenue Passenger Kilometres) by at least 16% compared to 2023. Finally, it will reduce absolute Scope 3 emissions by 25% from purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel- and energy-related activities, business travel, employee commuting, leased assets and use of sold products.
Looking ahead to 2050, the objective is to decrease absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 90% compared to 2023 and neutralise the remaining emissions to reach 100% through carbon removal projects.
With SBTi validation, World2Meet strengthens its commitment to decarbonisation and sustainability in the tourism industry. The company will continue to work on implementing innovative solutions and collaborating with its strategic partners to meet these ambitious goals.
