Costa Rica PSA compensation scheme

In April 2022, Icárion joined Costa Rica’s PSA (Payments for Environmental Services programme, in order to offset the carbon footprint of our passenger flights in the forests of the Central American country.

The PSA system is a key part of the process of forest recovery, and a direct source of income for landowners affected by the change in land use. It has a direct impact on indigenous associations owned by women in areas with low levels of social development, which are part of Biological Corridors with important water resources. Since the start of the project, over 160,000 hectares of forest have been protected in indigenous areas, with direct investment totalling more than 35 million dollars.

As part of Costa Rica’s National Decarbonisation Plan, PSA is a nature-based solution and a global benchmark as a tool for the 2020 NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions), the national climate commitments made under the Paris Agreement.

From the outset, carbon credits have been purchased from this acclaimed and efficient conservation and reforestation programme, operated directly and without intermediaries by the Costa Rican government organisation FONAFIFO (National Fund for Forest Financing). This means that we can be sure that all payments for carbon credits reaches the farming families and local indigenous associations who implement the forestry projects.
